Sensory Deprivation Float Tank FAQ

If you want to experience floating please take the time to understand our FAQ.

What is flotation?

Quite simply, flotation is the most effective method for stress relief and relaxation. The float tank has 11″ of water saturated with 1000 pounds of Epsom salt, creating incredibly buoyant water for you to float on. The water is heated to body temp which facilitates a feeling of oneness in the salt solution. The tank is sometimes also called a sensory deprivation tank.  However, we often notice our senses go into hyperdrive while floating right down to hearing your heart beat which makes for a pretty amazing experience.

Are there situations in which I will not be permitted to use the flotation tank?

We will not allow you to float if you:

  • Have Kidney or Respiratory Infections
  • Have open wounds, infectious skin conditions, or any recent tattoos that are still healing
  • Have incontinence, nausea, or diarrhea
  • Have uncontrolled epilepsy or serious mental conditions
  • Are a high-risk pregnancy or in the first trimester
  • Hair may not have any wax, beeswax, extensions, or have colored, keratin treated, or permed your hair within 6 weeks or until running clear
  • Are under the influence of any drug or alcohol
  • Are currently menstruating (reschedule)
  • Are under 18 without parental presence (12+ can float with parent in the room and consent form required)

We expect you to inform us of any conditions for your own safety and the safety of other floaters! We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone at any time.

Do I need to prepare for this experience?

Most importantly…relax. The tank will help but if you arrive relaxed, the experience will be more beneficial for you. There are a few additional things to consider.

  • Try not to shave 24hrs before you float, It isn’t the end of the world if you do…but salt water on freshly shaven legs isn’t the most pleasant thing on Earth.
  • Remove your contacts prior to floating (bring a container to store them in).
  • If you have caffeine or forget to eat a light meal before you float, it may interfere with your ability to relax.
  • Ladies, if you are on your period, give us a call to reschedule at no charge.
  • We provide everything needed as far as (towels, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, earplugs, a&d ointment to cover any small cuts to avoid salt, and q-tips for your ears) bathing suit is not needed either as you are in a private room and enter the float tank nude.

What if I am Claustrophobic or afraid?

It’s not as bad as it looks. The space inside the flotation tank is 4.5ft wide by 8.5 feet long. We have a semi-open float tank. It has a lid on it but we chose to leave the door off for client comfort. If you’re unsure, call and schedule a viewing to check the float tank out first!  Most people feel so much better seeing them and realizing how much space and control they have.

How is the tank cleaned?

There are 1000 pounds of medical grade Epsom salt dissolved in our float pod. Salinity is at 1.30 grams per cubic centimeter. The higher and higher the salt concentration, the lower and lower the ability for microorganisms to thrive in the water.  This automatically gives floatation tanks a leg up on cleanliness when compared to public pools and hot tubs.  After each session, the entire volume of the solution is  filtered through a 5 part filtration and sterilization system utilizing Ultra Violet light, Ozone System, Skimmer, Spa Filter, and H2O2.  UV is the safest most effective system available. It’s what water treatment facilities use to give us drinking water! It maintains the water’s soft, clean and crystal clear appearance. In addition all clients are required to shower prior to entering the tank.

I’m pregnant. Can floating harm my baby?

Absolutely not. In fact, pregnant women probably get more relief from the float tank than anyone else. Just lying on a bed can be extremely uncomfortable for a woman in the later stages of pregnancy due to the massive gravitational strain placed on the body. The float tank is a wonderful haven for pregnant women. We do, however, recommend that pregnant women do not float during the first trimester and if you are a high risk pregnancy. If you have any concerns about the effects of floating on your pregnancy, we ask you to consult and get permission from your physician before you float.

Can I drown if I fall asleep?

It is nearly impossible to drown in the tank. Since you are floating you do not need to know how to swim. The water is only about 11″ deep and has a very very high density of salt. This water is buoyant and will support you regardless of your size or weight. Since the water is pushing you to the surface, rolling over requires conscious effort, unlike in your bed.  IF you were to manage to turn over, the salt in the water would sting your eyes and wake you.  Additionally, it’s not dangerous to fall asleep in the tank.  Some people even use floating for this purpose!  One hour of sleep in the tank is roughly equivalent to 4 hours of regular sleep.

Can 2 people float together?

No. Flotation therapy is a solitary act. You would not want another person in your tank. HOWEVER we offer an awesome couples package for one person to float and one person to get a massage at the same time as the other and then switch for a very special experience!

Is there a cleaning fee if I damage the tank or salt solution?

If you damage the tank or salt solution it is a very costly and time consuming mistake. This is very rare and is usually in the case of unexpected bowel movements but could happen from a variety of possibilities. Please when in doubt, simply USE THE TOILET LOCATED IN THE SAME ROOM. The tank is checked and cleaned in between each guest to ensure a safe floating experience. We understand accidents may happen but due to the time and finances, all guests are required to sign our safety waiver as well as sign our cleaning fee liability form. The liability cleaning fee is $1,200 to account for:

  • Replacing 900 pounds of Epsom salt that typically runs around $800-900 with shipping
  • Replacing 180 gallons of water
  • The cost of a week of float tank downtime and labor needed to empty tank, clean tank, fill with new water, new filters, and refill salt.

If we were to account the true cost of a shut down and refill, it would be even more then the liability fee, but at the very least we would have to charge something to account for this very costly accident. We hope to never have to enforce this cleaning fee and we expect you to inform us of any conditions that may cause damage to the tank or the salt solution so we can cancel your appointment and play it safe instead of risk ever having to charge anyone for accidents.
